MVTimes: Sensual and sensational By Anna Marie D'Addarie - September 20, 2007
“...In "Venn duet," danced by Benjamin Asriel and Bergan Wheeler, choreographer Stefanie Nelson used earthquake-like moves to give birth to her work. The duet had several segments and the dancers seemed at times playful and argumentative. Their bodies melted into one, changing shape and meaning, a tribute to the dancers' ability and the choreographer's vision. This piece was always interesting and challenging for the audience.”

“Each year the Yard selects choreographers from a highly competitive pool of applicants from around the world for the Bessie Schonberg Choreographers' Residency. The residency includes housing, stipends, rehearsal space, and artistic guidance. The four choreographers then select a company of dancers at an intensive audition in New York City. For the past month, these dancers and choreographers have explored, experimented, shared ideas, and journeyed to this final performance weekend.

This year's concert will showcase new works by Sidra Bell, Janice Lancaster, Stefanie Nelson, and Sarah Young. The residency has been mentored by Yard associate artistic director Sandra Stone and the choreographers have received feedback from Lucinda Childs, Yard advisory board member; Martha Myers, Dean Emerita of the America Dance Festival; and Wendy Taucher, Yard artistic director. SOLAR ONE
“The eco-friendly arts association brings a selection of dance groups to Lincoln Center’s “Out of Doors” series. The one-day event includes a smattering of short works by young, up-and-coming choreographers of the kind who are usually seen at downtown venues, including the Butoh-inspired Tanya Calamoneri, the mixed-media experimenter Stefanie Nelson, and the Iranian-American Sahar Javedani. (Josie Robertson Plaza. 212-546-2656. Aug. 21 at 5:45.)...”

Offoffoff.com, Solar-Powered Dance festival keeps summertime moving, By QUINN BATSON July 29, 2007
“Stefanie Nelson's "Out of Wonderland (excerpt)" is a strong duet danced mainly in solos by Saar Harari and Cara Liguori, possibly exploring the unspoken desperation or passions of each partner in a couple. The duo are well-matched, and he, dressed in a suit, has a wonderful Ray Bolger as the Wizard of Oz scarecrow quality...”

Stefanie Nelson Dance Group - Out of Wonderland - Program Notes and Photos July 5, 2007
“Out of Wonderland is a physically powerful, emotionally poignant work inspired by the dichotomous life of Charles Dodgeson, a.k.a. Lewis Carroll, author of (the most wildly famous and widely referenced children's story of all time), The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland...”

Dance Review | Motion Makers/Inventors (New York Times) May 14, 2007
“...Anyone who wanted a crash course in downtown dance currents could have spent several profitable evenings attending the recent “La MaMa Moves!” festival, where some 50 companies and choreographers have been presented over the last two weeks.
Narrative — not usually a popular downtown inclination — was surprisingly alive on the final program of “Motion Makers,” on May 6. Zach Morris and Tom Pearson’s enigmatically titled “Rub the Sleep” and Stefanie Nelson’s “Out of Wonderland” both had stories of a kind, even if neither was entirely clear. Both had their moments of loopy charm: “Rub the Sleep” had a 1950s look with oppressed housewives, face cream, lipstick, a sharp knife and a dreaming prom queen; “Out of Wonderland” featured a tortured Lewis Carroll and (perhaps) his real-life Alice...”

The Dance Insider (New York City) 6/3/06 - Maura Nguyen Donohue
“...the program cruised through a series of solid solos, beginning with Stefanie Nelson's "Oh Alice" for Saar Harari. Nelson matched Jefferson Airplane's acid rock anthem "White Rabbit" with movement as ragged and disturbing as Grace Slick's voice. Harari executed a continuous cycle of jerks and spasms with a kind of iron-clad abandon always just on the verge of falling over the edge, or in this case into someone's Chardonnay. Harari performed as if the song was coursing through his veins and taking him for a wild and bumpy trip.”

LA REPUBBLICA (Genoa) 1/26/05 - Monica Corbellini
“Deserved success for Genova Danza, a contemporary dance festival that in the past few days, has animated the evenings at the Sala Mercato del (Teatro) Modena.
....Lische (Simone Magnani and Cristiano Fabbri, with Stefanie Nelson and Max Barachini, live music by Michele Ferrari)
…great tension and feeling with a vain of irony in Loops, a quartet in which the ethereal Stefanie Nelson stood out amongst the male protagonists.”

IL SECOLO XIX (Genoa) 1/27/05 -Simona Griggio
…. “Loops” (choreography by Simone Magnani, Cristiano Fabbri and Max Barachini, with the presence of the great dancer Stefanie Nelson and live music by Michele Ferrari), takes its inspiration and ideas of flight from the world of birds, to develop a very precise work on the body that literally had the audience spellbound. A choreographical composition full of delicacy and poetry, moving from the strong physical gestures typical of contact dance taking off into far reaching, unexplored horizons (the magic of Russell Maliphant comes to mind).”

Dance Europe, June 2004 - Bruce Michelson
“So how does cultural context affect the way choreography is approached and how it is received? American Stefanie Nelson contrasted the dance-cultural gulf between the oceans in her concise solo Emerge. With hair flying, she struggled to break out of a small self-inflicted circle of engagement in a clearly constructed work which makes reference to the American modern dance perspective.“

Evi-Dance, weekly live radio show, (www.ciut.fm), July 11, 2003 - Ted Fox
“I loved the Father/Daughter (Portrait of a Father & Daughter) piece…rare to see a senior dance on stage…the piece was quite moving…etched its way into my memory.”

EYE Weekly, July 10, 2003
